Update:
A few more months have passed, and at one point an agency debated for a week about whether or not to represent me (they eventually declined). Since then a steady stream of rejections have started to dent the confidence I originally had in the novel, but at the end of July I had another interested agent. She now has the manuscript, but I am now of the opinion that I would have more of a chance if I was a celebrity!
Several agents actually liked the book, but at the end of the day it 'didn't fit their lists'. It's not about vampires, warlocks, aliens or spies. It does not feature gratuitous sex or violence (one person advised me to 'get to the sex bit quicker'). It's about a man with addictions to pornography and alcohol, and the effect that these addictions have on his marriage. Another agent congratulated me on an original plot, and another even asked me to 'pare down the action and concentrate on one or two issues'. If I did that I would not have too much to write about.....
I think 'The Porn Detective' is a good read. I've no intention of re-writing it to suit one agent who may then reject it anyway. I like it as it is, and I hope the latest (and final) interested agent likes it too. The roller-coaster of emotions I have gone through in the past few months waiting to hear back from agents is coming to an end. There's a wealth of free tools to self-publish and market your own book, and at the end of the day you get to keep the rights!
So I wait and wait to hear the last opinion (some of them never reply at all), but have already saved my manuscript as an e-book ready for Smashwords........
Best wishes,
Stevie Turner
